Andrew Goupee, Assistant Professor at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine, stands for a portrait in Orono, Maine on Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. Researchers at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center are subjecting a 1/52th-scale model of a floating wind turbine to the elements it would face as part of a large offshore wind farm planned for the state's coast, near the tiny vacationers' retreat of Monhegan Island. It is an important milestone in the deployment of turbines that float over, rather than stand on the ocean's bottom, and could significantly open up vast swaths of waters for energy production that are too deep for conventional offshore equipment.
